Going with the flow

Going with the flow

This was the week when it really dawned on me that life is never going back to “normal”. Well, at least it won’t be the old norm we knew just a month ago. When I try and remember the last day I went out, worked at the studio, went to a grocery store, without a mask, or went to a restaurant for dinner, I can’t actually recall when it was.

Over the past month or more, like yourself, I have completely changed my work format, have not left my house, except to go for walks in the sunshine, and find myself in front of a computer screen most of the day teaching and checking in on friends and family. At the end of the day I am exhausted. I am sleeping eight plus hours a day and still feel tired. I think there is so much change, my brain is on overload (probably from too much screen time) and I feel it has been a challenge to manage all the changes in a short period of time. I feel confused and overwhelmed.

Before Covid-19, we acknowledged life’s greatest stressors were death of a loved one, divorce, moving, illness and job loss. Right now, the virus is creating a condition where many of these stressors and changes are happening all at once. Going with the flow may feel harder to do. I am a person who likes a schedule and finding a flow has been very difficult for me over the past couple of months. I recognize remnants of my past routine that are familiar, I wake up, meditate, make my green juice and drink my tea. After that, the day seems to move in unfamiliar ways and I am diligently working to find a flow and a pattern. Finding the same time each day for eating meals is my first focus. Knowing I am not leaving the house, I tend not to eat before my workday, thinking I will be able to go downstairs to my kitchen and grab something, if necessary. Similar disruptions have developed with my sleep and I am trying to find a way to stay consistent and to create an even and predictable flow for my day. I have gone as far as scheduling timed meals during the week and setting reminders for when to go to sleep so I can wake early.

This doesn’t seem to be ending any time soon and finding a new flow and some consistency is important in all parts of our lives. Consistency is the key to good health and energy. I know if I am struggling, I am guessing many of you may be as well.

I am offering a free Stress Reduction and Meditation class on Wednesdays @ 12:00 pm (EST) to help everyone find their flow. Please join me. All are welcome, all ages, all levels!

Things that Inspire Me

Keeping Quiet

by Pablo Neruda

Now we will count to twelve
and we will all keep still
for once on the face of the earth,
let’s not speak in any language;
let’s stop for a second,
and not move our arms so much.

It would be an exotic moment
without rush, without engines;
we would all be together
in a sudden strangeness.

Fishermen in the cold sea
would not harm whales
and the man gathering salt
would not look at his hurt hands.

Those who prepare green wars,
wars with gas, wars with fire,
victories with no survivors,
would put on clean clothes
and walk about with their brothers
in the shade, doing nothing.

What I want should not be confused
with total inactivity.
Life is what it is about;
I want no truck with death.

If we were not so single-minded
about keeping our lives moving,
and for once could do nothing,
perhaps a huge silence
might interrupt this sadness
of never understanding ourselves
and of threatening ourselves with death.
Perhaps the earth can teach us
as when everything seems dead
and later proves to be alive.

Now I’ll count up to twelve
and you keep quiet and I will go.
