Urgency of Now
“Human progress is neither automatic or inevitable.” - Maritin Luther King, Jr.
I want to take a moment to take in all that has taken place over the past few months. Sometimes when we are in a difficult period of time, we skip over what we have accomplished as a community or as individuals and how resilient we truly are. To quote one of my teachers, “ I will not suffer without gain”. The state of New York went from 1,000’s of people dying to opening back up in less than fifty days. That’s amazing! During that time, many of you switched seamlessly from coming to the yoga studio every day to doing all of your yoga on Zoom. Though it wasn’t easy for students or teachers, we adjusted to the new norm and felt excited breathing and connecting together through our yoga practice.
And now, after George Floyd’s murder earlier this week, many are reflecting on what we can do now. How can we break what seems to be an unending cycle of despair ? While we recognize how far we have come, it’s important to acknowledge how far we still have yet to go. Martin Luther King spoke about the “fierce urgency of now”. Many of my philosophy and meditation teachers have also spoken these same words in a different context. Eckhart Tolle’s book, The Power of Now, stresses the importance of living in the present moment even if the moment is painful. This year alone has shown us that the urgency is now. Now is the time for real conversations and meaningful actions that will shape our future and a world I want my child to live in. Now is the time to begin a regular yoga and meditation practice. Now is the time to call a friend you haven’t spoken to in awhile. How can we live in these difficult times and still find it in us to practice? It seems so frivolous. Yet, it is through our practice that we become more conscious of injustices and inequalities. It is through yoga that we are better able to find the strength to go into the world to help in some way. It is what clarifies our purpose and how we can live our lives to better serve those who are important to us and those who are in need.
